“Very happy but a couple Nuvi glitches

I love the text-to-speech feature, which is quite natural; the instructions are very clear, I found it is worth glancing at the green bar at the top of the screen to see the full instruction, just in case.

GLITCH! – I stopped at a restaurant. I restarted my car and turned the Nuvi on again; I had the security feature on, so nuvi asked for my pin. I mis-entered the pin – AND IT LOCKED ME OUT UNTIL I RETURNED TO MY HOUSE. That’s it — one shot — get it wrong, and no navigator for you. Even an ATM machine lets you try more than once.“

“NUVI 260W is very useful but with some flaws:
1. The sensitivity & time to acquire satellite signals are not very good. This inconsistency is really annoying if you are in a hurry.
2. Too long to power up. It should be designed to retain the condition just before the previous power-down.
3. The Text-to-Speech feature is good, except the voice is not clear. The person sounds as if she has a cold and it difficult to understand.
4. Battery usage, for me, was about 2 hours after being fully charged, not 5 hours as claimed.
I used nuvi 260W only for three weeks & found it useful enough but some things should be improved.“

The reviews for the Garmin 260W are overwhelmingly positive. Out of ~150 reviews we compared, the average consumer reported a rating of 8.6 / 10.

Take note this is barebones GPS: No MP3, no FM transmitter, no audio book player, no “where am I” to find closest hospitals, police and addresses.

Widescreen is a nice feature on this model (any Garmin GPS units that end with a “W” are widescreen).

Limitations:

  • Shorter battery life than advertised

Verdict:

Out rating of 7.2/10 is slightly lower than the average consumer review because when reading through the reviews we saw that there were consistent reports of difficulties with satellite acquisitions. Nothing too dramatic, but enough to be annoying depending on your location.

Combine this with shorter batter life and you may be better off with the nuvi 650, which is about the same price.
